I’m Not There

My wife and I tried to watch I’m Not There last night and couldn’t seem to finish it.

For those unacquainted the film is based on the life and work of the great Bob Dylan. Several different actors play characters based on Dylan in the different stages of his life. The acting was phenomenal and the cinematography was brilliant.

So why couldn’t we finish it?

Because not being well versed in all things Dylan we were ill-equipped to decipher the complicated metaphors about various biographical nuances on which the entire film seemed to be based. It was like watching a really good Japanese film with no subtitles and not knowing a lick of Japanese. After an hour you say “God, this is beautiful. Turn it the hell off and let’s go to bed.”

So if you are a Dylan fanatic I don’t have to tell you to scope this out, you already have. But if you’re not, don’t waste your money until you done some serious google searching and about three hours of research on the man, the myth, the Bob.

PS

If I were to make a movie about someone I worshiped I would make it so as to turn people on to that person’s work who were previously blind to it. In other words I would add about two more hours to “Walk The Line”.
